Obesity: Treat or Refer
Providing education and resources to build competency in treating obesity in a primary care setting or increase access to obesity medicine specialists to support obesity treatment.
What is Obesity: Treat or Refer?
Primary care providers are seeing the symptoms of obesity in their exam rooms daily. Whether cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, etc., clinicians need the tools to treat obesity at its root in order to resolve obesity-related diseases.
The Obesity: Treat or Refer education program seeks to...
- Increase providers' understanding of obesity as a chronic disease.
- Increase providers' comfort level and competency in treating obesity, or for those providers who are not comfortable treating obesity, increase referrals to obesity medicine experts in their patients' communities.
- Create, curate and mentor a community of obesity medicine champions, inside and outside of health systems across the US to offer support and education.
Through a partnership with Project ECHO, the OMA will host monthly virtual ECHO sessions which will include a brief didactic lecture followed by a patient case study. Through lecture and experiential learning, participants will enhance their knowledge base of the disease of obesity and how to best clinically manage their patients with obesity.
