Medical Bariatrician | UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health

Job Summary

Provide comprehensive patient care in the outpatient setting. 

Duties include establishing and growing a practice of Obesity Medicine within the multidisciplinary, comprehensive UW Health Metabolic & Bariatric Weight Management Program. This high-volume MBSAQIP Certified Bariatric Center at UW Health East Madison Hospital is a regional leader in obesity care, research and teaching. The practice will be integrated into the existing bariatric surgery clinic. Other duties may include clinical teaching of medical student residents, and fellows, as well as administrative duties. The preferred candidate will either have experience teaching and working with a diverse population or will welcome a commitment to teaching and working with a diverse population.

Job Summary

Full-time physician sought by Massachusetts General Hospital/MGPO to perform clinical duties in the
MGH Weight Center pediatrics program. Physician will see pediatric patients with obesity. The incumbent
will have teaching responsibilities and academic appointment will be at the Instructor, Assistant, or
Associate Professor level at Harvard Medical School and determined by the applicant's credentials.

Responsibilities

  1. Provide comprehensive care (assessment, diagnosis, treatment through behavioral/lifestyle

    young adult patients with obesity within an established academic outpatient clinic. The schedule
    follows standard Monday-Friday office hours and offers both in-office and virtual care delivery.
  2. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of advanced practice providers, nutrition therapists,
    psychologist, and metabolic/bariatric surgeons to optimize comprehensive patient care.
  3. Contribute to the development and implementation of new programs or services within the
    Pediatric Weight Center to enhance patient care and expand the clinic’s offerings.
  4. Pursue ongoing professional development through continuing education and actively stay
    informed on the latest advancements in pediatric obesity medicine.
  5. Participate in a group call rotation to manage after-hours urgent patient calls and provide cross
    coverage for colleagues during absences.
  6. Engage in the Mass General Brigham’s (MGB) electronic-consult program to provide focused
    guidance to other other clinicians at MGB who are caring for pediatric and young adult patients
    with obesity.
  7. Precept and teach medical residents and fellows rotating through the MGH Weight Center.

Requirements

Requires M.D. or D.O. degree or equivalent with training in Pediatrics or Family Medicine via
completion of ACGME-accredited residency in Pediatric or Family Medicine. Must be board certified
or board eligible for certification in Obesity Medicine. Completion of an Obesity Medicine fellowship is
preferred.

Fellowship Summary

UTHealth Center for Obesity Medicine and Metabolic Performance invites applications for our comprehensive Clinical Fellowship in Obesity Medicine. This one-year fellowship is designed for current residents or recent graduates of internal medicine, family medicine, or endocrinology training programs who wish to obtain rigorous, comprehensive subspecialty training in the area of Obesity Medicine. Applications are currently being accepted. Priority Application deadline is November 1. The offer date is December 2, 2024. 

Fellowship begins August 1, 2025 – July 31, 2026.

About the Fellowship

This fellowship has been designed to provide trainees with expertise and clinical experience in the emerging field of Obesity Medicine, with a primary focus on the evaluation and management of patients with obesity. Fellows will learn how to treat obesity through intensive lifestyle intervention, nutritional, behavioral, pharmacological, and surgical means, as well as how to address the comorbidities of this disorder most effectively. Trainees who complete this fellowship program will be prepared to pursue clinical and/or academic careers focused on obesity medicine and to become leaders in this emerging discipline. 

Fellowship training in Obesity Medicine will occur over 1 year. Trainees will spend the majority of time in the adult clinical environment training obesity and its comorbidities. Didactic education includes the physiology and pathophysiology of body weight regulation and fundamental knowledge of current treatment and research in the field of Obesity medicine. On completion of the fellowship, a fellow will be able to assess a patient with obesity or other metabolic disorders and determine/facilitate an appropriate treatment plan. Trainees will understand and utilize standard and innovative approaches to the treatment of obesity, including body composition and metabolic measurement, novel combination therapies, surgical and medical integration of care, and outcomes-related research and/or new and emerging treatment trials. They will be able to complete a full evaluation for patients with indications for obesity treatment both medically, surgically, and the med/surg combination and provide comprehensive care that leads to disease improvement. 

Fellows will also develop the skills to be a competent educator in Obesity Medicine for medical students, residents, and endocrinology fellows rotating in the center. Outcomes and standard-of-care research can be completed under the guidance of a member of the program faculty and collaborating departments.

Requirements & Qualifications

This fellowship is available to physicians who will have completed an accredited residency program in internal medicine, family medicine, or endocrinology. Other backgrounds are considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must have completed a United States or Canadian residency program.

  • Practice exceptional medicine within knownwell
    • Sees adults for primary care, often with a focus on metabolic health. Sees pediatric patients only for metabolic health.

    • Coordinates with the broader care team to ensure the patient has the support they need .
    • Documents as necessary to ensure accurate billing.
    • Communicates with patients in a timely matter through our portal for questions, including with the assistance of a nurse practitioner.

  • Ensure panel is open to any individual, regardless of their current health status and comorbidities.
  • Listen to the aspirations of the patient and ensure care is tailored to the patient’s unique health journey.
