Women with obesity are often at a higher risk of experiencing mental health conditions that can make losing weight harder. This article aims to explore the complex relationship between women, obesity, and mental health and examine how healthcare professionals can help women manage their weight and improve their overall well-being. Here are some of the most common mental health conditions that women with obesity experience: Depression or Anxiety: Depression and/or anxiety in women with obesity can be caused by various factors, including hormonal changes, social stigma, and reduced physical activity. It is important to note that not all women with obesity will experience these mental health issues and that individual experiences may vary. Clinicians can play an important role in addressing mental health issues in women with obesity. During the initial evaluation of a patient, clinicians should screen for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Women with obesity may experience social stigma and discrimination, which can negatively impact their mental health.

He shed light on the pathophysiology of how this convenient, free, popular diet could help our patients with obesity and how to counsel our patients on this, breaking down complex hormonal pathways into simple takeaways while keeping things humorous at the same time. The bottom line, the one-size-fits-all model is out, and the spring conference has given us expert guidance on how to treat a diverse group of patients with obesity, which is sorely needed. Is there ever a more exhilarating time to be involved in obesity medicine? With every OMA conference I go to, I always leave feeling invigorated and brimming with new ideas to bring back to my patients – Atlanta is no exception. Obesity Medicine Association Introduces New Incoming Board of Trustees and Executive Director

The Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) welcomed their newly elected Board of Trustees at the recent Overcoming Obesity conference in Chicago, IL. The Board brings expertise in the field of obesity medicine to guide and direct the organization. Ethan Lazarus is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and a Fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association. Lindner Award in 2017, the Obesity Medicine Clinician of the Year in 2015, and the Dr. Lindner Award from OMA, and in 2017, she was recognized as OMA’s Obesity Medicine Clinician of the Year. She is a fellow and diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and presently obtaining certification as a Culinary Medicine Specialist from the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine from Tulane Medical School. Alexander was the recipient of the 2018 Obesity Medicine Clinician of the Year Award and the 2019 Dr. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, as well as Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology. Bays was awarded the Obesity Medicine Clinician of the Year Award (2016), the Committee Leadership Award (2014), and the Dr. Auriemma is board certified in Obesity Medicine and Family Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association. Auriemma also serves as an alternate delegate at the American Medical Association representing the Obesity Medicine Association. She is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology and is a diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She is a board-certified pediatrician, obesity medical specialist, and adolescent medicine specialist. Carolynn Francavilla Brown is board certified in Family Medicine and owns Green Mountain Partners for Health in Lakewood, CO. She previously served on the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors, the Colorado Medical Society Board and the American Medical Association Resident and Fellow Section Governing Council. She is board-certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine. Bharti Shetye (Dr. Abby) is a weight loss specialist certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She is also trained as a primary care physician certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
