Frequently Asked Questions

OMA micro-credentials are focused professional learning pathways offered through the OMA Academy designed to build competency in specific clinical areas of obesity medicine. Each micro-credential consists of curated courses and learning activities that target a specialty topic within obesity care.

Micro-credentials are designed for clinicians (e.g., physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals) seeking to deepen expertise in targeted areas of obesity treatment and clinical practice.

Unlike standalone courses, micro-credentials bundle multiple educational components into a themed learning pathway. They are skill-focused and intended to demonstrate competency in specific clinical practice domains.

Earning a micro-credential helps clinicians enhance their specialized knowledge, improve patient care practices in obesity medicine, and signal commitment to evidence-based treatment approaches in varying areas of practice.

To earn a micro-credential badge, learners must complete:

  • The Fundamentals of Obesity Treatment course (if not already completed within 24 months)
  • The designated micro-credential pathway courses for each topic area

The Fundamentals of Obesity Treatment is required in order to begin earning micro-credentials. It only needs to be taken once, and then multiple micro-credentials may be earned. If a clinician has completed the Fundamentals course within the past 24 months before pursuing a micro-credential, it does not have to be retaken.

Once the Fundamentals of Obesity Treatment course and all required coursework within a micro-credential pathway are completed in the OMA Academy, the corresponding micro-credential badge is awarded to the learner.
