Obesity Care Advocacy Network

The Obesity Care Advocacy Network (OCAN) is a diverse group of organizations dedicated to changing how the population of the U.S. perceives and approaches the obesity epidemic. OCAN educates about obesity and does advocacy for obesity treatment, including public policies and increased funding for obesity education, research, and care. OCAN’s primary goals are:

  • To prevent disease progression
  • To improve access to evidence-based treatments
  • To improve standards of quality care
  • To eliminate weight bias
  • To foster innovation in future obesity treatments

The Obesity Medicine Association partners with other organizations to make up OCAN. The OCAN partner organizations are:

  • Obesity Medicine Association
  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists
  • American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
  • Endocrine Society
  • Novo Nordisk, Inc.
  • Obesity Action Coalition
  • The Obesity Society

Obesity Care Continuum

Since 2012, OMA has been a member of the Obesity Care Continuum (OCC). OCC is a partnership among obesity organizations to advance the field of obesity medicine through advocacy for obesity treatment on the federal and state levels. OCC works to promote access to and coverage of medical obesity treatment services. The OCC partner organizations are:

  • Obesity Medicine Association
  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
  • American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
  • Obesity Action Coalition
  • The Obesity Society

Advocacy Committee

Members of the Obesity Medicine Association’s advocacy committee participate in advocacy days, where representatives from the Obesity Medicine Association and other OCC organizations visit Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to meet with legislators in the House and Senate. The purpose of these visits is to raise awareness and encourage support from legislators on obesity initiatives.
