White House Announces Expanded Access for Obesity Medications
Share this post
The Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) welcomes today’s announcement by the White House Administration regarding expanded access to obesity medications and a commitment to make effective treatment for the chronic disease of obesity more affordable and widely available.
As the clinical leaders in obesity medicine, we recognize that treating obesity first is essential to improving overall health outcomes and reducing the burden of related chronic conditions. Medication management is a key component of comprehensive care for this disease — alongside lifestyle, behavioral, nutrition, and surgical interventions when appropriate.
We view today’s development as an important milestone in recognizing obesity as a serious, relapsing, and treatable chronic disease versus a lifestyle choice, and this supports the imperative of treating obesity first to improve the health of individuals and communities.
We look forward to working with policymakers, payers, clinicians and patient advocates to ensure that the promise of this announcement is realized in clinical practice — including timely access, appropriate coverage, provider education, equitable care, and ongoing support for long‐term outcomes.
