DX Building an Obesity Treatment Plan: Advanced Cases

Using the Obesity Medicine Association’s four pillars of clinical obesity treatment, learn how to develop obesity treatment plans for patients with complex adiposity-related diseases. This case-based course is intended to build upon the core concepts of obesity medicine and help you gain the skills to implement more advanced techniques in your practice. You’ll use real-life cases to practice building individualized treatment plans from start to finish.

  • 12:45-1:45 PM - Postpartum Weight Management

    In this course, we will review challenges that are unique to obesity treatment in the postpartum period.  We will discuss specific medical conditions that should be considered in this population.  We will review safe treatment options for breastfeeding women.  We will then review a classic case of a woman trying to lose weight after pregnancy. 

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Understand unique challenges to behavior change for postpartum women
    2. Identify co-existing disease states in postpartum women with obesity
    3. Recognize considerations for women who are breastfeeding

    Explore relationships between OW/OB and renal disease.  Explore physiology, pathophysiology, effects of weight loss on renal disease, pharmacology, nutrition, and role of Obesity Medicine Specialist in management of renal disease.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Understand why understanding renal disease is important in Obesity Medicine.
    2. Understand basics of renal physiology. Explore what goes wrong, understand the physiology of renal disease in context of overweight and obesity.
    3. Learn about the beneficial effects of weight loss on renal disease.
    4. Understand the role of medications and nutrition in renal disease associated with overweight and obesity.
    5. Understand the role of the Obesity Medicine Specialist in renal disease with overweight and obesity.

  • 5:30-6:30 PM - Nuts and Bolts of Setting Up an Obesity Medicine Practice

    Starting an obesity medicine practice requires two things, discussing weight management with your patients and having the proper office setup to properly engage and support your patients with obesity. This session will review the key components for evaluating patients with obesity as well as the equipment needs and office set-up considerations the minimize stigma and bias. Helpful questionnaires, lifestyle prescriptions, information resources, and practice revenue streams will be discussed.  

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Discuss key exam components for a patient with obesity
    2. Identify proper set-up for a medical office to accommodate patients with obesity
    3. Utilize common questionnaires as part of an obesity evaluation
    4. Adopt lifestyle prescriptions and information resources in a weight management practice
    5. Employ new revenues streams in an obesity medicine practice
